Hydro Jetting in Denver, CO
Hydro jetting uses water — a lot of it, moving very fast — to strip the inside of a drain or sewer line back to bare pipe. Where a cable machine punches through a blockage, a jetter removes the material that created it. For grease, sludge, scale, sand and residual root hair, nothing else comes close.
It is also the service most often sold when it is not needed and most often skipped when it is. This guide explains the mechanics honestly, including the situations where we will refuse to jet a line.
How hydro jetting works
A jetter consists of a water source, a high-pressure pump, a hose reel, and a nozzle. Pressures typically range from 1,500 PSI for small interior lines to 4,000 PSI for commercial mains, with flow rates from about 4 to 18 gallons per minute. Flow matters as much as pressure: pressure cuts, but volume carries debris away.
The nozzle is where the engineering lives. Most of the orifices face backward at a shallow angle, which does two things at once — it propels the hose forward up the line without any pushing, and it scours the pipe wall in a full circle as it travels. A smaller forward jet opens a path through the obstruction. Specialty heads exist for specific jobs: chain flails and rotating heads for hard scale, penetrating nozzles for solid blockages, and root-cutting heads for fibrous intrusion.
The technician runs the hose to the far end of the section, then works it back slowly, which is when the actual cleaning happens. Debris travels downstream ahead of the retreating nozzle and out of the system.
When hydro jetting is the right call
- Kitchen and restaurant lines with hardened grease coating the pipe wall
- Main sewers that have been cabled repeatedly and keep closing
- Lines carrying sand, silt or construction sediment
- Mineral scale in older galvanized or cast iron pipe
- Fine root hair remaining after a mechanical root cut
- Commercial and multifamily lines on a preventive maintenance schedule
- Any line where the goal is restored diameter rather than temporary flow
A useful test: if the drain works after service but slows again within months, cabling is treating a symptom and jetting is the correct escalation.
When we will not jet a line
High-pressure water is a tool, not a magic wand, and in the wrong pipe it does harm. We decline to jet, or insist on a camera inspection first, when any of the following apply.
- Visible longitudinal cracking or missing pipe bottom (common in old cast iron)
- A partially collapsed section, where pressure can accelerate failure
- Severely offset joints with sharp edges the hose can catch on
- Orangeburg (bituminous fiber) pipe, which delaminates under pressure
- Unknown pipe material and condition on a home older than roughly 1960 with no inspection history
Ask before you buy
If a company proposes jetting your main line without having seen inside it, ask why. On a sewer of unknown condition, the camera should come first. It is a small cost that prevents a very large one.
